Frequently Asked
Questions

Common questions about working with the firm, the intake process, and what to expect.

How do I know if I need an attorney?

+

That is the first question we answer. When you contact the firm, the initial conversation is an honest assessment of whether you need legal representation, what level of attorney your situation requires, and whether this firm is the right fit. There is no obligation and no pressure. Counsel before counsel.

What practice areas does the firm handle?

+

The firm focuses on commercial and business litigation, construction litigation, AOAO and corporate governance, and outside general counsel services. Matters are accepted selectively, with a focus on high-complexity and high-stakes disputes.

What is the intake process?

+

All inquiries begin with a conflict check. You provide your name, the opposing party's name, and a brief description of your matter. Once the conflict check is cleared (typically one business day), the firm conducts a more detailed intake to evaluate the matter and determine whether representation is appropriate.

Why is a conflict check required before sharing details?

+

Attorneys have ethical obligations to avoid conflicts of interest. If the firm has a current or prior relationship with an opposing party, it may be unable to represent you. The conflict check protects both you and the firm by confirming no conflicts exist before confidential information is exchanged.

Will I work directly with Bryson Chow?

+

Yes. Every matter accepted by the firm is handled personally by Bryson R. Chow, Esq. There are no handoffs to junior associates or contract attorneys. The attorney who evaluates your matter is the same attorney who appears in court, negotiates on your behalf, and makes every strategic decision.

How does billing work?

+

The firm bills on an hourly basis for most litigation matters. Fee structures, billing rates, and retainer requirements are discussed during the initial consultation once a conflict check has been completed and the firm has evaluated the matter. Alternative arrangements may be available depending on the nature of the engagement.

Does the firm handle cases outside of Hawaii?

+

The firm is licensed in Hawaii and primarily handles matters in Hawaii state and federal courts. For matters with multistate dimensions, the firm can coordinate with counsel in other jurisdictions as needed.

I am a condominium board member. Can the firm represent our association?

+

Yes. The firm has served as counsel to some of Hawaii's largest condominium associations and community associations. Representation includes governance matters, enforcement and collections, construction defect litigation, and regulatory compliance. Board members should contact the firm through the standard intake process.
